Native Americans inhabited the Ile d’Orléans long before Jacques Cartier set foot on it in 1535 and named it in honour of the Duc d’Orleans, son of François 1er, King of France. Nestled between the St. Lawrence River and the coast’s escarpment, the historic road known as Route de la Nouvelle-France reveals its treasures, including root cellars and over a thousand ancestral homes, which bear witness of an exceptionally rich heritage. The journey will lead you to the world-famous Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré shrine, the oldest pilgrimage site in North America, with its commemorative chapel, Stations of the Cross and renowned basilica.
